Does your dog love rolling in the sand, running with the waves or simply sitting and contemplating the big blue sea? Is the beach their favourite place to be? If so, you’ll know it’s impossible to explain to them that they can go with you during winter, but not during the summer bathing season. therefore, why not choose a pet-friendly beach in portugal instead?
Pet-friendly beaches started to become popular in Portugal in 2016, meaning you no longer have to hide your four-legged friend under a towel and go to the quietest corner of the beach! There are currently six beaches in mainland Portugal that you can visit with your fur baby during the bathing season:
Praia do Coral, Viana do Castelo
Praia da Ramalha Sul, Esposende
Praia Suave Mar, Esposende
Praia do Porto da Areia Norte, Peniche
Praia dos Pescadores (Praia Velha), Paço de Arcos
Praia das Amoreiras, Santa Cruz
Praia das Furnas-Rio, Odemira
Here are some important things to remember:
- Make sure your dog is always on a leash;
- If your dog is classed as a dangerous breed, it must wear a muzzle;
- You must pick up your dog’s poop (as you always should!);
- You should not take your dog to the beach if it is sick, in heat, pregnant or injured;
- Make sure you have your dog’s vaccine bulletin with you.
In conclusion, Beaches without concessions (i.e. usually without a lifeguard) are also another option, and can be visited all year round – as long as there are no signs saying otherwise.
